Starting-battery selection

Battery Charger Applications
for Vehicles & Equipment

Start with the battery specification. We welcome wholesale and OEM inquiries for vehicle and equipment starting batteries, with each charger model reviewed against the actual requirements.

A useful starting point.
A model-specific decision.

Different vehicles and machines can use lead-acid starting batteries. The correct charger depends on the battery specification and charging environment.

Our current lead-acid catalog is centred on 12V and 12V/24V models. Equipment examples below describe demand to review; they are not a product approval or a guarantee of compatibility.

01

Cars & Light Commercial Vehicles

Review the lead-acid battery used to start the engine in a car, SUV, van or light-commercial vehicle.

Equipment / battery sources:Yuasa R1

What to confirm

  • Battery voltage, capacity (Ah) and the battery maker's charging instructions.
  • The exact lead-acid type and required charging profile, including any AGM or EFB requirements.
  • Workshop use, intended charging duration, AC supply and plug.
Selection boundary

A vehicle name or a 12V label is not enough to confirm compatibility. Support for AGM, EFB, GEL or other subtypes must be checked for the exact charger version.

02

Motorcycles & Powersports

Some motorcycles, petrol scooters, ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles use lead-acid starting batteries. Battery sizes and voltage versions differ.

Equipment / battery sources:Yuasa R2Yuasa Australia R3Yuasa R16

What to confirm

  • Voltage, lead-acid type and the actual capacity marked on the battery.
  • The manufacturer's permitted charging current and the charger's published minimum capacity.
  • Whether the request is for occasional charging or a specified storage-maintenance function.
Selection boundary

Small batteries can fall below a charger's published range. Current catalog models must not be assumed suitable for 6V batteries, very small motorcycle batteries or unattended winter-long connection.

03

Lawn & Garden Equipment

Ride-on mowers and garden tractors can have a lead-acid battery for starting a combustion engine.

Equipment / battery sources:Interstate R4Honda R5

What to confirm

  • Whether the equipment has an electric-start engine and a separate starting battery.
  • Battery voltage, chemistry, capacity and permitted charging current.
  • Access to the battery and the intended dry, ventilated charging location.
Selection boundary

An engine-starting battery is different from the traction pack in a battery-powered mower or garden tool. The equipment category alone does not establish a charger match.

04

Generators & Electric-Start Equipment

Selected electric-start engines and generators use a separate lead-acid battery to crank the engine.

Equipment / battery sources:Honda R5Generac R6

What to confirm

  • Equipment model, electric-start configuration and the actual starting-battery specification.
  • Voltage, capacity, permitted charging current and the manufacturer's connection instructions.
  • Whether a removable-battery charging task or a permanent standby-system function is required.
Selection boundary

A portable charger is not automatically a replacement for the equipment's built-in float charger or an unattended standby-power system. Portable power stations are outside this starting-battery application.

05

Boats & Personal Watercraft

A boat engine or personal watercraft may use a starting battery. Marine starting, deep-cycle and dual-purpose batteries have different roles.

What to confirm

  • The battery's starting, deep-cycle or dual-purpose classification and its charging instructions.
  • Voltage, chemistry, capacity and whether more than one battery or isolated bank is involved.
  • Charging location and any required onboard, water-ingress or ignition-protection approval.
Selection boundary

The current catalog does not establish fixed onboard installation, waterproofing, ignition protection or independent multi-bank charging capability. Submit these requirements for review; do not infer them from battery compatibility.

06

Trucks, Farm & Construction Equipment

Commercial vehicles, farm machinery and selected construction equipment can use lead-acid engine-starting batteries in different system arrangements.

Equipment / battery sources:VARTA R9Exide R10Yuasa R11

What to confirm

  • Whether the charger will connect to one battery or an entire battery bank, and its actual voltage.
  • Capacity, battery type, permitted charging current and expected charging task.
  • The equipment manufacturer's instructions, installation conditions and exact charger output version.
Selection boundary

A 12V model does not charge an entire 24V bank. A 24V label does not make a charger suitable for every truck or large equipment battery bank. Follow the equipment instructions for battery-bank connections.

Before a quotation

Four checks for a clearer inquiry.

  1. 01

    Identify the battery

Send the battery label and explain its starting function.

  2. 02

    Confirm its requirements

Voltage, chemistry, capacity and permitted charging current.

  3. 03

    Review the charger

Check the exact model, output version, profile and environment.

  4. 04

    Request a quotation

Include model or application, quantity, destination and OEM needs.

Selection questions

Check the battery behind the equipment.

Do you currently list a 6V lead-acid charger?

No verified 6V model is listed in the current lead-acid catalog. Some older vehicles and powersports equipment use 6V batteries, but this does not make a 12V or 12V/24V charger suitable. You may submit a 6V requirement for evaluation; availability or custom supply is not promised.

Will a compact charger suit every motorcycle battery?

No. For example, the current 12V 2.5A Compact Lead-Acid Battery Charger lists 7–30Ah; a 4Ah battery is below that published range. Check the battery maker's permitted charging current as well. The 8A portable model's capacity remains subject to confirmation, so it is not an automatic alternative.

Review the compact model
Are marine starting and deep-cycle batteries interchangeable?

They serve different roles. Identify whether the battery is starting, deep-cycle or dual-purpose and obtain its charging requirements. A battery match does not establish waterproofing, ignition protection, fixed onboard installation or multi-bank capability for a charger.

How should I choose for a multi-battery system?

State whether the charging task concerns one battery or the complete bank, and give its actual voltage and capacity. Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions. We do not infer a safe series/parallel connection or a charging method from the vehicle category.

Why do similar machines still need different chargers?

Battery voltage, chemistry, capacity, permitted current and charging profiles can differ even within the same equipment category. AGM, EFB, GEL and other lead-acid types must be reviewed against the exact model specification.

Does this include traction, UPS or storage batteries?

This application guide focuses on engine-starting batteries. Electric golf carts, traction forklifts, floor-cleaning machines, wheelchairs, solar storage and UPS systems need separate product evidence. An RV engine-starting battery must also be distinguished from its house battery and wider electrical system.

Do the lithium models cover every e-bike?

No. The two lithium models are a separate range in confirmed 12.6V or 14.6V output versions. Chemistry, series count, connector and polarity must match the pack. They are not specified for general 36V or 48V e-bike charging.
